Atari Jaguar
A home console released in North America in November 1993 and marketed as the world's first 64-bit game system.
Atari Corporation released the Jaguar in North America in November 1993. Flare Technology began development in the early 1990s and focused on the system after the Panther console was canceled. It launched with Cybermorph as the pack-in game.
Atari marketed it as the world's first 64-bit game system. Some people argued that its design did not meet the definition of a 64-bit system.
Why it matters
Only 63 licensed games, 50 on cartridge and 13 on CD-ROM, were released before Atari discontinued the Jaguar in 1996. Complex multi-chip hardware, hardware bugs and poor programming tools made development hard. Weak sales eroded support from outside game makers.
